Babylon holds the real clues to unravelling all the questions concerning the return of Christ.
This subject is the single longest prophecy in the bible. It has special consideration in Revelation with a great deal of information about its trading details. All of it is there for a reason.
When does Babylon fall? That might not seem such an important question at first glance. To realise how important it is you only need to think about how the world reacts to its downfall. Absolute shock and horror is the reaction to the stunning and completely overwhelming set of circumstances that engulfs the world’s richest nation. No one is rejoicing that the beast is done for, on the contrary everyone is lamenting that this ‘financial engine’ is finished. The questions should be raising their hands. The big question: Who is Babylon?
The articles that cover this subject are in the left column.
The main column has a range of scriptures each with a simple question: When does this occur?
They are all part of our 'Toolkit': A checklist to make sure we have the subject completely covered.
This subject from the Toolkit is divided into two sections. You can click to jump straight to the second one.
Rev 18:2
And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen.
Q.176 When does this angel come with this message?
|
Babylon Is a real place. That is the first consideration. In the context of the end time the detail given is much too specific for it to be considered just a 'system'. Babylon is the worlds most powerful military nation. It is also the worlds foremost financial institution that all other nations use as the basis for its trading patterns. Once Babylon falls the whole financial system is cast into chaos.
From this we can quickly realize that we need to know who Babylon is since its very sudden and totally unexpected fall will affect everyone.
The two main subjects to the left will answer all the questions.
Be sure to read 'When does Babylon' fall first.

Rev 14:8
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Q 155. When does ‘Babylon’ fall? |
This may appear to be just a repeat of the Rev 18 verse, however the context is different. In Rev 14 it is an account by John showing an order of events. First one angel came, 'then after I saw' and another angel performed it's task, 'then followed another angel' and so on for five angels. This is a timeline showing the order of events as John saw them ( more specifically, as Christ is telling us). The order given is: first the gospel goes to all the world, then Babylon falls and next the beast comes on the scene.

Jer 51:41
How is Sheshach taken! and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! how is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations! 42 The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.
Q 33. When will the cities (of Babylon) that were the praise of the earth become a desolation to all that see her? |
OT application to the End Time:
A quick read of Jer 50 and 51 shows so many similarities with Rev 18 that it certainly appears to be the one and same event. To be sure that the context is in the End Time we need some verses that show it would be impossible to be otherwise.
Some examples would be:
Jer 50:2 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God. 5 They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. This verse depicts a time when both Judah and Israel seek the Lord to make a covenant that will never be broken. This has never happened. It is refering to the future new covenant in Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: 11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
Jer 51:6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD’S vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. This verse has a direct application to Rev 18:4 where God's people are still in Babylon and are told to leave before its utter destruction. Babylon was never utterly destroyed in the past and not when there were God's people in it that had to flee for their own protection. Babylon 'changed ownership' on several occasions but was still there in a dilapidated state during the New testament era. |
Jer 50:23
Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD’S vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence.
Q 26. When does Babylon, (the ‘hammer of the earth’) fall because it strove against the Lord? |
Babylon falls almost at the beginning of the end time. The crash of the world’s financial system is the central issue. It is the first ‘physical’ event and sets the world on its devastating downward spiral. As a result of the world having to ‘reshuffle’ its political and strategic alignments, the beast power emerges. This whole subject is critical to understanding the whole end time and return of Christ.
OT application to end time: Jeremiah 50 is full of situations that are contradictions if it is not applicable to a future date. Example: in the opening verses Babylon is introduced. In v4 ‘in those days at that time (that Babylon falls) Israel (defeated and completely unheard of again 120 years before) and Judah shall seek the Lord for a perpetual covenant that shall never be broken’. This is an impossible combination to have happened in the past.

1 Thess 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
Q 114. When will they say Peace and safety and then suddenly destruction comes on them? |
Logically you would not describe a situation in which ‘sudden destruction’ is the surprise result if ‘sudden destruction’ had been, or was in progress at the time. That tells us that this must be at the very beginning of the end time. The only other ‘sudden destruction’ mentioned is the fall of Babylon. The two are the same event. For a full explanation see: When They Say Peace and Safety |
Jer 50:43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.
Q 30. When will Babylon hear the report of the kings rising up against her? |
The first point here is the kings of the earth are rising up against Babylon. This is not Christ at Armageddon. Once the ‘sudden destruction’ comes on the world’s financial and military superpower it is then vulnerable to being overpowered by much lesser nations. Babylon is defeated. This event occurs at the very beginning of the end time. In contrast the beast power and his kings are undefeated until Christ (not the kings of the earth) destroys them at Armageddon at the very ‘end’. The beast and Babylon are not the same identity. For a full explanation see: When Does Babylon Fall
OT application to the end time: This is the longest prophesy in the bible; Jeremiah 50/51 must be of major significance for this reason. There are many circumstances in these chapters that prevent it from applying only to the past. It has very many passages that are found almost word for word in Rev 18 making it an adjunct to that passage; still future. The opening passage in chapter 50 starts by describing the fall of Babylon and saying ‘at that time’– the time of the fall of Babylon; Israel and Judah shall come seeking the Lord for perpetual covenant that shall be never broken’.
The word that the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet. 2 Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces. 3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast. 4 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God. 5 They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. Jer 50:1,5
This is clearly not talking of an historic event. Israel had been removed as a nation one hundred and twenty years before Judah was taken into captivity in Babylon. At the time Babylon eventually fell many years later in history, Israel was completely gone from the world scene as a visible entity. Judah was back in Jerusalem from the captivity and certainly never entered a ‘perpetual covenant never to be broken’. This is still a future event as covered by many other prophecies in particular the N.T. Heb 8 covenant which also involves Israel and Judah. This is an extremely complex set of circumstances that is at the very heart of understanding the whole end time. Without knowing the identity of Babylon, Israel and Judah no sense of the day of the Lord can be made.

Rev 18:8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
Q 178. When is the sudden destruction of Babylon? |
At the time Babylon suffers the very sudden destruction, the world is peacefully trading. The list of goods being traded in Rev 18 are normal day-to-day goods including wheat, fine flour, wine and oil. Once the end time starts none of these are available. Even as early as the second seal world war has broken out and by the fourth seal, a quarter of the worlds population has died from war, disease and starvation. These were all caused by the collapse of the worlds financial system when Babylon fell. Babylon must fall at the very beginning of the end time, the world laments its falling simply because the whole international trade and commerce system fell with it; as a result the world is now thrown into chaos. In contrast the whole end time day of the Lord is a saga of death and destruction, not a time of ships plying the oceans delivering nutmeg and cinnamon.
See: When Does Babylon Fall |
Rev 18:9 The kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, 10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
Q 179. At what point in time will the kings of the earth lament the fall of Babylon? |

OT application to the end time: This Jeremiah chapter is a companion verse to the Rev 18 that show how shocked the world is at the fall of Babylon. There are many verses in Jer 50/51 that demonstrate its application in full can only be applicable to the end time. Here is a repeat of an explanation from Q. 30: This is the longest prophesy in the bible; Jeremiah 50/51 must be of major significance for this reason. Q 146. At what point in the end time will the casual lifestyle of song and music concerts, art exhibitions, weddings and pizza parlors be over? |
You would expect the answer to be very obvious. How can the end time be one of relaxed social gatherings? Once the end time starts it is the worst time the world has ever known. The sudden fall of Babylon must occur at the very beginning of the day of the Lord. Only by having the mind clouded by preconceived ideas can you skip over the obvious which is Babylon is destroyed at the beginning of the end time. Christ destroys the beast, a separate entity approximately seven years later at Armageddon. The beast and Babylon cannot be the same individual.

Rev 18:23 Thy merchants were the great men of the earth.
Q 184. When will the world’s largest multinational corporations collapse and cease normal trade? |
Babylon is the world’s financial engine. The world uses it’s currency for most day-to-day transactions. At the beginning of the end time when Babylon falls and with it the big financial institutions, the world is left financially rudderless. When Babylon falls the banks collapse, the stock markets collapse, all normal worldwide trade stops: “the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more”. Rev 18:11 |
Isa 47:11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.
Q 7. When will the sudden desolation strike on the one that says ‘I am’? |
This is just one of the many verses that speak of the sudden destruction that will fall on Babylon; a very consistent theme in the bible. Babylon in v 1 is the subject of the chapter, in v8 and v10 she describes herself as the one that will never be defeated, the ‘I am’. This is repeated in Rev 18:7 and Zeph 2:15. All the scriptures on the fall of Babylon point to one thing when she is ‘proud against her God’ (Jer 50:14: ‘sinned against the Lord’, 50:24: ‘striven against the Lord’, 50:29: proud against the Lord) then God will act. The fall of Babylon (a Christian nation if it is held accountable for sinning against God) occurs at the very beginning of the end time.
OT application of this verse for the end time: In Zeph 2:15 the one that says ‘I am’ is also one of the nations that are ‘corrected’ by God. This one however is one ‘that trusted not in the Lord. She drew not near to her God’ she must (should) therefore be a ‘Christian’ nation. The context is all during the day of the Lord previous chapter 1:14.
This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand. Zeph 2:15
The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. 15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, 16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. Zeph 1:14 |
Jer 50:31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee. 32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.
Q 28. When will Babylon ‘the most proud’ have fire kindled in its cities? |
At the very early part of the end time. The answer to this question is the same as Q. 7 so is repeated here: This is just one of the many verses that speak of the sudden destruction that will fall on Babylon; a very consistent theme in the bible. Babylon in Isa 47:1 is the subject of the chapter, in v8 and v10 she describes herself as the one that will never be defeated, the ‘I am’. This is repeated in Rev 18:7 and Zeph 2:15. Rev 18:15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! 17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.
Q 182. At what point in time is all the world trading normally and suddenly Babylon, the world’s richest trading nation is destroyed? |
This will have the same answer as for Q.179, so it is repeated here: At the time Babylon suffers the very sudden destruction, the world is peacefully trading. The list of goods being traded in Rev 18 are normal day-to-day goods including wheat, fine flour, wine and oil. Once the end time starts none of these are available. Q 80. When did the ‘city’ that called itself ‘I am’ become a desolation? |
At the very early part of the end time. Rev 18:11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more.
Q 180. At what point in time does the future of the world’s prevailing economy become in doubt? |
At the time Babylon suffers the very sudden destruction, the world is peacefully trading. The list of goods being traded in Rev 18 are normal day to day goods including wheat, fine flour, wine and oil. Once the end time starts none of these are available. Even as early as the second seal world war has broken out and by the fourth seal, a quarter of the worlds population has died from war and disease and starvation. These were all caused by the collapse of the worlds financial system when Babylon fell. Q 181. When will all the normal day-to-day goods still be available in the end time? |
Revelation 18 writes about a transitional period. On one day trading and business in general is normal; ships are sailing the oceans with their cargoes of normal day-to-day goods as listed. These include general food items; meat, flour, wine and oil. The next day: ‘in one day’, ‘in one hour’ v 8 and 10, it all changes so drastically the world is no longer the same. The devastation is so complete on the world’s most prosperous nation that no one is sure how the traders are going to keep going anymore. In fact they don’t. The seals in Rev 6 show that at a very early stage world war and a shortage of food results in a quarter of the world’s population not surviving. Food ran out and from then on matters only get worse. The answer is normal day-to-day goods will not be available at all during the whole of the seven year end time once Babylon has fallen. It is the worst time the world has ever known.
And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. 4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. 5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. 7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. 8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Rev 6:3 |
Jer 50:46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
Q 31. When will all the nations be shocked at the fall of Babylon? |
The fall of Babylon is a total shock to the whole world. This would indicate the world had been at complete ‘rest’ beforehand. If war or financial turmoil had been prevalent at the time it would not have been unexpected. The answer therefore is twofold. On the one hand Babylon falls in relative peacetime, because of this it must be the very beginning of the end time as far as events that impact the world.

Rev 18:4 I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. 8 her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire:
Q 177. When do the end time saints come out of Babylon before her sudden destruction? |
The ‘lightweight’ answer is fairly obvious; they must come out before Babylon falls. The reason should be as obvious, so that they don’t get caught up in the turmoil of the utter destruction. But let’s go another step further, why do they ‘come out’? This is the very beginning of the end time; where do they go? If this is the very beginning what are they expected to do for the next few years? How will they know ahead of time when Babylon is going to fall?
All of these questions make it very obvious that a very good and accurate understanding of all the issues is paramount.
Before any of these questions can be answered the identity of Babylon must be established. Which country or countries is it exactly that some of God’s people must come out of?

Q 27. When will it be time to come out of Babylon and declare the vengeance of the Lord? |
The Gospel goes to the entire world. That ‘triggers’ the end time. Those that were fully aware, ready and waiting for this event know what has to be done next. The cry 'the Lord cometh’ has now taken place. The fall of Babylon will be next. This will occur in approximately six months. Up to that time all those involved will be warning within their own respective countries that ‘utter destruction’ is about to fall on that country. At the other end of the spectrum are those that say this is a time of ‘peace and safety’. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Q 24. When is the time to come out of Babylon and be ‘active’? |
The short answer is before it falls. The trick is to know when that will be.

This is an impossible combination to have happened in the past.
See: When Does Babylon Fall |
Isa 52:11 Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing ; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD. 12 For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward.
Q 10. When do they (that bear the vessels of the Lord) come out of Babylon? |
Before Babylon falls.
OT application to end time: v7 of this chapter sets the context, ‘Zion, thy God reigneth!’ V 15 is also an allusion to Christ ruling.
See: When Does Babylon Fall |
Isa 48:20 Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob.
Q 8. When is the command to come out of Babylon and declare that Jacob has been redeemed? |
Before Babylon falls, however in the context of this verse ‘declaring Jacob has been redeemed’ needs a little explanation. Jacob in this context comprises the twelve complete tribes of Israel. By ‘being redeemed’ it is meant that Christ has ‘repossessed’ them but speaking in the future tense. He is going to make sure they become His people whether they like it or not. These people that come out of Babylon are to explain that ‘Israel’ (all of Jacob) is about to undergo a monumental transformation.
OT application to end time: the context of this section carries on from Isa 45:17 where God says But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end. This is speaking about the far distant future. In 48:10 the chapter concerned, God says He will ‘refine Israel in the furnace of affliction’. The 'affliction' is needed in order to 'refine' what will become the leading nation in the millennium. Israel to date has never been refined to the degree God requires. See: Favouritism
See: Who Is Babylon Who Is Israel |
Jer 51:45 My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD.
Q 34. When do God’s people come out of Babylon from before the anger of the Lord? |
Before the fall of Babylon since the anger of the Lord is about to descend on ‘Babylon’.
Jer 51:6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD' vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD' hand, that made all the earth drunken: Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.
Q 32. When is the time to flee out of Babylon before its sudden fall? |
Before its fall, but when is that? See: When Does Babylon Fall

Zech 2:6 Ho, ho, come forth , and flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD. 7 Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon.
Q 196. When does ‘O Zion’ come out of Babylon? |
Before the fall of Babylon. See: When Does Babylon Fall
OT application to end time: A few verses on : Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. 11 And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee. Zech 2:10
Strictly an end time situation. |
Rev 18:19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
Q 183. At what point in time are all the worlds maritime traders suddenly shocked at the collapse of the largest international financial participant? |
The very beginning of the end time when all world's finances and trading is perfectly normal (until the sudden fall of the world's richest and most powerful nation).
NB. This question is out of place, it should be nearer the top of the page, apologies. |
