The Beast

24 scriptures on the subject of the Beast explained below.

The beast will be no mystery. What he is, who he is; all becomes apparent only too readily when the time comes. We are told sixteen times that there will be no signs whatsoever to indicate that the ‘day of the Lord’ is about to get underway. If the beast or his ‘mark’ were about it would be obvious as Paul points out in 2 Thess 2.
We can be certain that the beast comes into existence after the ‘day of the Lord’ begins. There will be no need to guess then.

The articles that cover this subject are in the left column.

In the main column are scriptures on the subject from throughout the bible as used in the Toolkit. Where necessary the use of Old Testament scriptures will have an explanation how and why they are applicable to the return of Christ.

This subject from the Toolkit is divided into two sections. You can click to jump straight to the second one.

    1)  The Rise of the Beast                  Q  no 156 – 149

    2)  The Abomination of Desolation   Q  no  95 –171

Rev 14:9  The third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God.
Q 156.  When does the warning not to take the mark of the beast go out?

Once the gospel message according to Rev 14 goes out, from that moment it will be obvious that the ‘day of the Lord’ has begun. That is the moment where the transition occurs even though no great upheaval on the world scene has taken place. Nothing will happen on the world scene until Babylon falls.
Within a little more than six months  from when the gospel goes out, Babylon will fall and then the beast will emerge. Who the beast is will be obvious to everyone. It is the primary job of the Church (who were ready) to warn of what is coming up.
The ‘safety factor’ involved here is the gospel going to ‘all flesh’ cannot be mistaken for anything else, therefore it is not possible to make a mistake or cry wolf with this event.
All resources possible will now be poured into this effort.

        When Does Babylon Fall
        Who Is Babylon

Rev 17:12  The ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
Q 172.  When will the ten kings give their support to the beast?

Once Babylon falls, the world economy utterly collapses. The banks fail, the stock markets all collapse.
The nations of Europe stand a chance of survival with the separate euro if they can finally ‘get their act together’. The situation is so urgent, absolutely desperate, that not only is there no objection to one leader taking control, everyone is relieved beyond words that someone seems able to steer a path through the debris. This is sheer survival in a world suddenly turned upside down.

See: When Does Babylon Fall

Dan 8:23  A king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
Q 45.  At what point will the beast emerge?

As above.
OT application to end time:  In Dan 8:17 Gabriel tells Daniel that the vision is for ‘the time of the end’. In v 25 the king of ‘fierce countenance will fight against the ‘Prince of princes’ and shall be ‘broken without hand’.  These are not descriptions about ordinary people or ordinary events. This is Armageddon.

Dan 7:24    And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
Q 42. When will the ten kings ‘arise’ with the beast?

See above.
OT application to end time: V25 could not apply to anything other than the Church in the end time. V27 states it is an ‘everlasting kingdom’. Not possible until Christ returns.

Rev 13:16   He causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: That no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Q 151.  When will the mark of the beast be introduced?

Several points need to be understood here. Firstly ‘all’ does not mean literally all the earth. Obviously the true Church, the Saints, do not follow, obey (take the mark) or worship the beast. Who else? The ‘innumerable multitude’ does not and they are ‘too many to count’. Equally as obvious should be the fact that the beast, the king of the North goes out to battle with nations resulting in one third of mankind dying (Rev 9:13). They were not worshipping the beast or following him. Some scriptures that show ‘all’ is an expression that more closely means ‘many’ or according to the context ‘all that are relevant to that situation’:
And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins Matt 3:4
Not ‘all’ of Judea and Jerusalem were ‘baptized and confessing their sins’ by John.
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.  Luke 2:1  Not all the world was taxed by Augustus.
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.  John 12:19  Not ‘all’ the world had gone after Him, then or now.
Next in order to answer the question, when will the beast be in existence is the issue? The beast does not come into existence until after the fall of Babylon. It is as a result of the fall of Babylon and the subsequent collapse of the world economy that a vacuum is created in which the need for such a person is created. His success and the lack of resistance to his policies are solely due to the desperate circumstances of the time. People turn to the only apparent solution on offer. See: The Fall of Babylon. The rise of the beast and his ‘mark’ will immediately be active once the fall of Babylon has occurred.

Rev 13:17  And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Q 152.  When does it become virtually impossible to exist without the mark of the beast?

See the answer given to Q. 151. In addition it might be helpful to think of the situation in terms similar to the ration books in World War 2. In the desperate situation the world finds itself after the fall of Babylon, food for everyone is a critical issue. One quarter of the world dies from war and the shortages of food that occur at this time. These are the second, third and fourth seals of Revelation 6. The whole regime of the beast is a form of martial law in the interest of survival for the region. For most of the population survival is the only consideration, the means to achieve that are not important. Without complying with the (new) state requirements, no ‘ration book’ will be given and no provision for work. The situation is so grave the state (beast) controls everything. The beast’s subjects are grateful and hail him as a hero for rescuing the situation. Those that oppose him (the Church) are seen as enemies of the state.

2 Thess 2:8  And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.
Q 192.  When will the beast first appear on the world scene?

The beast will very suddenly come on the scene immediately after Babylon falls. See: When does Babylon Fall. The stability of the world is completely swept away with the total collapse of the world’s economy as a result of the sudden collapse of Babylon. In the political and strategic vacuum created from this environment a very powerful figure emerges to ‘rescue’ the people from this situation. He is seen as the greatest hero of the day.

Dan 8:13  How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice , and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
Q 44. When will these 2300 days (mornings and evenings v26) begin?

A detailed understanding of the overall timing of the end time will need to be understood to follow the explanation. Please see the Charts and Timelines page. The short answer is we will need to come back 2300 days from the known ‘end’ of the day of the Lord which is when Christ returns with the Saints. The angel Gabriel explains the fact that it is literal days and not a figurative period of time. He confirms we are talking about ‘mornings and evenings’ i.e. twenty four hour periods. And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.  Dan 8:26
OT application to the end time: v 17 states it for the ‘time of the end’. Verse 25 speaks about the ‘Prince of princes’, Christ standing against ‘the king of fierce countenance’ (the beast) at Armageddon and the end result is the beast is ‘broken without (human) hand’.

Dan 7:25  And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.
Q 43.  When will this ‘three and a half years’ commence?

This is immediately prior to the return of Christ with the Saints and the establishing of the kingdom (millennium): And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.   Dan 7:27 see also v 22, v18.
This is the last three and a half years that is also the great tribulation. It commences at the sixth seal when the entire world sees Christ on His throne (Rev 6:12, Matt 24:29) and the resurrection occurs.
OT application to end time: In verse 27 the kingdom is handed over to the Saints. This is still future. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.  Dan 7:27
See: When is the Resurrection

Rev 13:3  And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
Q 149.  When does the beast suffer an apparent fatal wound?

The beast comes into existence immediately after the fall of Babylon. At first he is seen as a great hero having ‘rescued’ the people from the very grave financial and political turmoil the world descends into. The ‘martial law’ he institutes is seen as necessary in this time of world war and upheaval (Rev 6:3,7 ‘peace was taken from the earth’). Most people are only too happy to comply if it means survival. However in this very difficult environment the only way his society will exist is with stringent rules that all must comply with. This includes religious restrictions with a ‘one religion fits all’ constraint. For a start the Muslims within his jurisdiction will declare a ‘Fatwah’.
The most likely scenario is that as the beast declares himself god there will be an assassination attempt. The context of Rev 13 is that once the deadly wound occurred, he recovered in such a way that the ‘world wondered after the beast’. Empowered by Satan this must have been the equivalent of being raised from the dead. He now has forty-two months to continue (until Christ disposes of him). This turning point three and a half years before the ‘end’ is a pivotal moment for many end time circumstances. The resurrection occurs, the two witnesses come on the scene. Satan is cast down to earth. The great tribulation begins. These last two are the ones that influence the answer for our question. The presence of Satan in this world in a more literal way is the clue that allows for a transformation including a ‘resurrection’ in the beast. Satan now possesses him in every sense of the word. By default all who follow the beast are worshipping Satan. When the beast says he is god in one sense he is not telling a lie: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.  2 Cor 4:4. The fact that the Muslims are involved at this time is described in Daniel 11:40  And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. 41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.  42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.  43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. 44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. 45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
From other scriptures we know this is in the ‘midst of the week’ three and a half years from the ‘end’. The king of the South, Arab (Muslim) nations ‘push’ at the king of the North. (North of Jerusalem, Europe). The beast, now possessed by Satan retaliates by taking the whole Middle East. The Arabs who had previously disposed the Jewish nation of Israel into captivity are now in turn severely treated in this encounter. However these actions have a repercussion. The beast having taken control of the Middle East and its oil now upsets Asia. That is seen as a threatening move and Asia now mobilizes its 200 million troops for wars that over the next three and a half years result in the death of a third of mankind. Rev 9:13.

Matt 24:15  When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
Q 95.  When will the abomination of desolation stand in the holy place?

95   Dan 12:11 is the clearest but by no means the only way of working out the time frame for this question. It occurs at the midway point, three and a half years before the end.
And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days Dan 12:11
OT application to the end time. In verse 9 Daniel is told that the words he had received were for ‘the time of the end’. We are still here and ‘all the people of the book’ have not been ‘delivered’ yet v 1.

2 Thess 2:4  Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Q 117.  When will the man of sin (the beast) say that he is god?

The beast says he is god at least forty two months before the end when he takes the Middle East and Jerusalem and commits the ‘abomination’.
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.  6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.  Rev 13:5

Rev 13:5  And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name.
Q 150.  When does this three and a half year period of the beast start?

150   This should be self explanatory, three and a half years before Christ returns, then the beast, the ‘desolator’ (margin) of Dan 9:27 will be ‘consumed’.

Dan 11:36  And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished.
Q 49.  When will the ‘king’ claim that he is god?

The beast says he is god at least forty two months before the end when he takes the Middle East and Jerusalem and commits the ‘abomination’. By saying ‘he will prosper’ means that he will continue until his time is up at Armageddon.
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.  6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.  Rev 13:5
OT application to end time: In verse 40 it refers to this happening at ‘the time of the end’. A few verses on in the next chapter qualifies that as the time of the three and a half year great tribulation and the resurrection: And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.  Dan 12:1 ‘Time of the end’ is mentioned again in v4

Rev 12:7  There was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels with him.
Q 145.  When is this war in heaven and Satan cast down to the earth?

The resurrection occurs at the sixth seal, the midway point in the end time. The Saints are taken to the sea of glass for the last three and a half years of the end time; the great tribulation. When Satan is cast down as a result of ‘losing’ the war in heaven he is angry with the Church and goes to make war with them. He is too late; they have already gone. Furious at missing his opportunity, he then goes after the remainder of God’s people that were not chosen as ‘first fruits’ in the first resurrection with devastating results. This and other verses indicate that the time Satan is cast down is the forty-two months before Christ returns.

Dan 11:37   Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces.
Q 195.  When will the beast and ten kings institute the ‘new religion’?

This verse clearly indicates that what the beast institutes is something new (therefore not the Catholic Church). In Rev17 on the formation of the beast empire, which is very sudden, and under conditions of great stress a completely new system is organized to cope with the drastic circumstances resulting from the fall of Babylon. One of the new ‘clauses’ of this emergency coalition is a new compulsory universal religion. This is what makes it impossible for true Christians to be involved in the beast system and take his ‘mark’. It will in some way shape or form involve ‘denying Christ’. This will occur immediately the beast comes into his ‘position’, approximately seven months after the ‘day of the Lord’ begins. This is based on Dan 8:13
Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?   14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days;  then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
The ‘days’ are evenings and mornings, i.e. twenty four hour days totaling seven months short of seven years. This is the length of time the beast will be active.
OT application to the end time: Verse 35 of Dan 11 qualifies it as ‘even to the time of the end’.

Dan 9:27  And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Q 47.  When is the midst of the week?

The covenant is confirmed at the beginning of the ‘week’. This is the very beginning of the seven years of the ‘day of the Lord’.
See:  The Gospel To All The World  for detailed explanation.
OT application to the end time: this is an involved subject and will need a proper answer to do it justice. See: The Day of The Lord  there is a section on Dan 9:27.

Rev 17:16 The ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.
Q 175.  The woman, ‘the scarlet whore’, is based in a ‘city’ which is made desolate and naked by the ten kings and beast. When do they set up the new headquarters in Jerusalem?

The beast sets up his new headquarters in Jerusalem with forty-two months of the end time left to go. This question is poorly expressed (apologies). The old ‘city’ is the old false religion. The beast takes the Middle East and sets up his new capitol in Jerusalem.

Dan 11:44  But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.
Q 51. When will the war against the ‘North East’ commence?

Immediately the beast takes the Middle East (forty-two months into the end time) it is interpreted that he will now challenge for control of the world. Asia is alarmed and responds by amassing 200 million troops to counter this move. This results in a ‘third of man’ dying in wars and leads to Armageddon.
OT application to the end time: Verse 35 of Dan 11 qualifies it as ‘even to the time of the end’.

Dan 12:11  And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
Q 54. When will this three and a half years (and one month) begin?

The number of days in all passages to do with the return of Christ always refers to one thing, how many days ‘until the end’ or ‘conclusion of the matter’ – a better expression. This question therefore answers itself . Many events are occurring at this time overlapping themselves to a degree.
The beast takes Jerusalem, the resurrection of the ‘first fruits’ occurs; the world is terrified at the site of Christ. Satan is cast down; the ‘two witnesses’ come on the scene. These are not all of the events. It is the midway point of the end time.
OT application to end time: Dan 12 is ‘sealed until the time of the end’, v 9.

Rev 17:16 The ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

Q 174.  The ten kings and the beast will dispose of the ‘whore’ in favour of a ‘new religion’. When will this occur?

Dan 11:37 is the companion verse:  Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. 38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces.
This verse clearly indicates that what the beast institutes is something new (therefore not the Catholic Church as such). It will in some way, shape or form involve ‘denying Christ’. This will occur immediately after the beast comes into his ‘position’, approximately seven months after the ‘day of the Lord’ begins.

Dan 11:40  And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into the glorious land.
Q 50. When will the king of the north invade the Middle East?

The beast says he is god at least forty two months before the end when he takes the Middle East and Jerusalem and commits the ‘abomination’.
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.  6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.  Rev 13:5
OT application to the end time: The Dan11:40 verse itself says ‘at the time of the end’.

Rev 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Q 148.  When is the start of this period of persecution on faithful Christians?

This verse unfortunately will cause many people problems. The resurrection has occurred yet many faithful Christians were not included in this resurrection. For the purpose of this question we will stick to the issue of timing. It should be obvious from the messages to the Churches in the early chapters of Revelation and many other scriptures that not every ‘professing’ Christian will be in the first resurrection. There are other resurrections. Not being in the first resurrection is not a salvation issue. The Dragon (Satan) is angry at the whole world, not only Christians. The resurrection occurred at the sixth seal three and a half years before the end.
See:  When Is The Resurrection

Rev 17:8  The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life.
Q 171.  When does the beast ascend out of the bottomless pit?

At the sixth seal many overlapping events occur. The beast takes Jerusalem, the resurrection of the ‘first fruits’ occurs; the world is terrified at the site of Christ. Satan is cast down; the ‘two witnesses’ come on the scene. These are not all of the events. It is the midway point of the end time. The beast ascending out of the pit here is linked to the ‘whole world wonders at him’. One reference to that is when his ‘deadly wound is healed’ but he miraculously recovers. At that point he has forty-two months left. ‘Coming out of the bottomless pit’ would be another way of saying ‘all hell brakes loose’, the door to hell is opened.
